A lawsuit against the National Park Service by outside special interest groups has drastically affected Hatteras Island. Large portions of the seashore beaches are inaccessible even though research does not support the piping plover as endangered. Less than 20 bird deaths have been recorded and the majority was by Park Service vehicles. Interestingly, the temporary plan supported by these special interest groups encourages the Park Service to also kill all natural predators of the piping plover such as mink, fox and raccoon. This action is being enforced. How’s that for ironic? Several local groups such as OBPA, NCBBA and CHAPA are fighting to stop denial to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area as well as focusing on preservation and protection of our natural resources. Please visit their websites for more information.
